ROMANO FOLDED HIS HANDS TOGETHER, rested them on the book and closed his eyes. The ceiling above us dissolved into a dark sky. The walls faded into a landscape of smooth porcelain and glowing alabaster. We sat and waited, hands outstretched. What would have been days passed above us. No sound to be heard. No thing to be seen. Every thought vanishing until the thought of thoughts vanished. Until there was nothing but silence. Until we were still.
Slowly, the stars fell from the sky, one by one, then two by two then millions upon millions, until the sky turned white into a deluge of light. A small glowing star fell from the sky, landing inches from the table, hovering between our outstretched hands. Its cool light warmed our faces. From it emerged the sound of water, a field of grass, the perfume of a rose, a forest at dusk and the reflection of the sky across the surface of a clear mountain lake.
Romano opened his eyes and took a breath. ‘Where does the edge of heaven begin?’ he said. ‘And where will we find its end?’
One of 28 letters from Romano Fonseca’s 19th century translation of The Alphabet of Angels by the late Italo Calvino. This unusual collection of spiritual texts has been meticulously transposed from its original context and updated by The Curators in a limited edition of 12 prints.
