Translation of page “D” from The Alphabet of Angels.
A GOLDEN BROWN CUBE OF SUGAR drops from Romano’s fingers into a cup of coffee and dissolves in the dark liquid. He leans back in his chair, holding the coffee in his lap, and take short sips.
Finishing his coffee, Romano leans forward to examine another page in the book, letting his thumb flip through its soft, leathery pages, until he stops, spreads open a pair of pages and gently smooths them out with the flat palms of his hands.
The left page contains a block of text written in an intricate, unknown script. Above it is a cluster of colored circles and finely incised lines with corresponding notations for each, also indecipherable. On the opposite page hovers a smooth cube resembling a piece of soft caramel. More delicate notations fill the margins of the page.
Pinching one of its corners, Romano gently peels the cube off the page, places it neatly on the tablecloth and smooths out its wrinkles.
One of 28 letters from Romano Fonseca’s 19th century translation of The Alphabet of Angels by the late Italo Calvino. This unusual collection of spiritual texts has been meticulously transposed from its original context and updated by The Curators in a limited edition of 12 prints.
Each print includes a Certificate of Authenticity and is signed and numbered by The Curators.
